aims of this database are to: provide information that has not, to
date, been readily available;
attract feedback to further improve the quality and breadth of information
available.
IUCN's Species Survival Commission Species Information Service (SIS)
Through its volunteer membership of 7,000 species conservation experts,
IUCN's Species Survival Commission (SSC) holds what is probably the
world's most complete body of information on the status and distribution
of species threatened with extinction. Although abundant, the data
and information contained within the SSC network is widely dispersed
and sometimes difficult to access. The Species Information Service
is being developed as SSC's data management initiative to address this
problem.
IUCN Red Data List tof Threatened
Species
IUCN - The World Conservation Union, through its Species Survival Commission
(SSC) has for more than four decades been assessing the conservation
status of species, subspecies, varieties and even selected subpopulations
on a global scale in order to highlight taxa threatened with extinction,
and therefore promote their conservation. The taxa assessed for the IUCN
Red List are the bearers of genetic diversity and the building blocks
of ecosystems, and information on their conservation
status and distribution provides the foundation for making informed decisions
about conserving biodiversity from local to global levels.
Marine
Debris Program

Environmental Vulnerability
Index
A vulnerability index for the natural environment, the basis of all human welfare,
has been developed by the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC),
the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and their partners. The index
was developed through consultation and collaboration with countries, institutions

The goal of the PII is ‘ To conserve island biodiversity and
enhance the sustainability of livelihoods of men, women and youth in
the Pacific ’. This goal is being achieved through the objective
of reducing negative impacts of invasive species primarily by managing
them at selected Demonstration Projects in Pacific Island Countries
and Territories. The fundamental role of the Demonstration Projects
is to raise awareness of the negative effects of invasive species on
biodiversity and people’s livelihoods, generate support for their
management and improve the capacity of communities to manage invasive
problems. Website includes information about projects plus a range of

Pacific Island
Network: Inventory and Monitoring Programme
The Inventory and Monitoring Program is a major component of the National
Park Service’s strategy to improve park management through greater
reliance on scientific information. The Pacific Island Network (PACN)
is one of 32 National Park Service Inventory & Monitoring networks
of national parks linked by geography and shared natural resource characteristics.
Spanning islands in American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana archipelago,
and Hawaii, the Pacific Island Network encompasses an area as large
as the continental United States. The islands and near-shore marine
areas within the National Park system protect a wealth of the planet's
aquatic, and terrestrial biodiversity, unique geologic features, and
historic and cultural sites. Isolated from the continental land-masses,
these federally protected areas share similarities, including threats
from invasive species, limited land area, and finite resources inherent
on islands.
Pacific Invasives Inititiative
[PII]
The goal of the PII is ‘ To conserve island biodiversity and enhance
the sustainability of livelihoods of men, women and youth in the Pacific ’.

impacts of invasive species primarily by managing them at selected Demonstration
Projects in Pacific Island Countries and Territories. The fundamental
role of the Demonstration Projects is to raise awareness of the negative
effects of invasive species on biodiversity and people’s livelihoods,
generate support for their management and improve the capacity of communities
to manage invasive problems. Website includes access to fukll text documents

Pacific Region Ocean Data & Information
Portal
The goal of PRODIP is to develop and implement an end-to-end ocean
data and information portal with capabilities of exploring in-situ
data from real-time data streams and integrating the data streams with
archives across the Internet through a "one-stop shopping" (single
interface) query for users who have a high bandwidth Internet connection.
Alternatively, users without high-speed network access can order CD/DVD-ROMs
from the NODC that contain the integrated dataset and then use software
over potentially low-bandwidth/high-latency network connections to
periodically update the CD/DVD-ROM-based archive with new data.

WTEC's primary concern is representing the interests of rural communities
and families directly involved in the conservation and/or sustainable
management of Vanuatu's natural environment and resource. The organisation
also has an education programme in schools, is engaged in promoting
sustainable income generation (particularly low-impact tourism) and

database search portal - books and journals)
A new portal that crosses both international and database boundaries
was launched recently for people interested in scientific sources that
are unavailable through commercial search engines such as Google. WorldWideScience.org
was developed by the Energy Department and the
British Library, along with science and technology organizations in Australia,
Brazil, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands. It employs
federated search technology a search method that simultaneously executes a query
against an array of databases, then aggregates and ranks the results and gives
users a single entry point for searching far-flung science portals in parallel
with only one query... http://worldwidescience.org/
