World Environment Day celebrations, Monday 6 June

On 6 June, SPREP celebrated World Environment Day in partnership with the Samoan Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Meteorology (MNREM) at Tooa Salamasina Hall in Apia. A global event celebrated in over 100 countries, World Environment Day aims to stimulate action and interest in environmental issues.

As 2005 marks the Year of Action Against Waste, the theme for the Pacific, was “Take steps to a cleaner Pacific”, which was adopted by Samoa, Fiji, PNG, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands.

MNREM marked World Environment Day by announcing their intention to introduce legislation to ban the use of plastic bags, particularly by supermarkets and retail stores. MNREM is currently working with SPREP to develop and implement this plan.
