Highlights

Oceania Regional Response Team and SPREP strengthen ties
FileJoint Coordinators of the Oceania Regional Response Team (ORRT) paid a courtesy visit to the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme in April.

They were Mr Lance Richman, the ORRT Coordinator from the United States of Americas Environmental Protection Agency Office in San Francisco and Lieutenant Commander (Mr) Joseph Zwack, the ORRT Coordinator from the United States Coast Guard based in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The visit saw a discussion take place to discuss how the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme and the Oceania Regional Response Team can work together moreenhance their cooperation. It is planned that synergising and sharing the resources available to each organisation will work for the better of their to better serve SPREP member countries and territories. American Samoa, Guam, Commonwealth of Northern Marianas Islands and the USA are members of both organisations.

 

Kiribati Tackles its Pharmaceutical Waste
It’s a temporary solution, but Kiribati is moving to put the lid on its mountain of pharmaceutical waste by repackaging to be properly disposed later. Dr Frank Griffin of SPREP was in the low-lying country to assist the Government of Kiribati tackle its pharmaceutical waste.

The island currently has three steel shipping containers containing used pharmaceutical materials. The materials were repacked into bags and stored temporarily in a vacant building. Following the cleanup, Dr Griffin says the intention is “to have a system in place to help Kiribati destroy its healthcare waste over time. The whole idea is for Kiribati to take a lead role in dealing with its waste.” Dr Griffin also provided Kiribati guidance to develop a disposal plan for pharmaceutica ...(to be continued)

 

Rubbish is a Resource! pdf now available
WasteKitCoverThe world is being swamped by mountains of rubbish, it seems. This is a problem everywhere, but no more so than in the small island nations of the Pacific.

The challenge is to deal with all this rubbish, and the new "Waste Resource Kit for the Pacific Islands" aims to help by showing how to extract valuable resources from the waste stream.

Rubbish is a Resource! - it is not a problem if we approach it in the right way.

The Kit can show you how: its key component is a DVD with many "waste" resources compiled from a wide variety of sources by Alice Leney. He did the work on behalf of the International Waters Programme which is coming to an end this year at SPREP.
