Opportunity - ReefBase Pacific Project Assistant
Background
Applications
are invited from nationals of Pacific Island countries and territories
living in Samoa, for the above position with SPREP in Apia , Samoa . Internship
is for a period of 6 months starting June 3rd, 2008.
The
ReefBase Pacific Project is run by the WorldFish Center , primarily from
its office based within the premises of the Institute of Marine Resources
(IMR) at the University of the South Pacific (USP) in Suva , Fiji . Some
project coordination will also take place from the ReefBase Unit at WorldFish
headquarters in Penang , Malaysia .
The
ReefBase Pacific project is a component of the Coral Reef Initiative for
the South Pacific (CRISP), funded by the Agence Française de Développement
(AFD) (French Agency for Development) and with matching funds from the
United Nations Fund (UNF). The main focus of the project will be to facilitate
networking, collaboration and sharing of information among main coral
reef agencies in the region (e.g. GCRMN, SPC, SPREP, SOPAC, USP, EPHE-CRIOBE).
The
Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) is an
independent intergovernmental agency that provides assistance and technical
advisory services to Pacific Island countries, territories and administrations
in the protection and management of their environment to ensure they achieve
sustainable development for present and future generations. SPREP comprises
25 members1
The
WorldFish Center is an international non-profit research organisation
dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger by improving fisheries and aquaculture.
The WorldFish Center is also the host of ReefBase ( http://www.reefbase.org
), the world ’ s leading information system on coral reefs, which
aims to provide scientists and managers with quality data and information
relevant to the monitoring, conservation and management of these vital
natural resources.

Primary Objectives
of the Project
- To
engage with professionals in the South Pacific region involved in the
research, conservation and management of coral reef and reef fishery
resources, in order to identify and share data and information on issues
and solutions related to the management of coral reefs and their fisheries.

To use the network and knowledge base to create an effective information
system which can provide managers, researchers and reef users with easy
access to a wealth of existing and new information relevant to the management
and sustainable use of coral reefs and their fisheries in the Pacific.
Key Responsibilities
The
successful candidate will work closely with the Coral Reef Management
Officer and the Coastal Management Team to undertake the following roles
and responsibilities:

To
locate and identify data, information, publications and other project
materials (both paper and electronic) on themes agreed suitable for
inclusion in ReefBase Pacific

To
enter data and information in the ReefBase Pacific information system
-
To
assist the National Environment Service of the Cook Islands to collate
their data related to the marine environment and set up a GIS in collaboration
with SPREP Marine Conservation Analyst.
-
To
assist the ReefBase Pacific team in Fiji in their work with the fisheries
and Environment department of Samoa .
-
To
assist the GCRMN Polynesia Mana node to contribute to ReefBase by
uploading its current data.

To
assist in communication with project partners and potential collaborators
-
To
collaborate with the ReefBase Pacific team (Fiji) and ReefBase team
(Malaysia) to develop reports, presentations, CD-ROMs, Web pages and
other materials on South Pacific coral reefs and related fishery resources.

To
carry out a personal project related to coral reefs that would contribute
to the ReefBase Pacific project.

To
work with the Coral Reef Management Officer, the ReefBase Pacific
coordinator, the Information Resource Center Manager and the Marine
Conservation Analyst to develop a 6-month detailed workplan in the
week of June 9th - June 13th 2008.
Challenges to
be faced by the position

Being organised and systematic in carrying out the work activities (including
database operations)

Being able to identify, among the many reports that will be seen, those
that are suitable for inclusion in ReefBase Pacific
Selection Criteria
Essential
- Bachelor
of Science degree, preferably in marine science or related field or
any equivalent experience in the field of environment.
-
A good communicator in English (both oral and written) and experience
in networking with professionals and fostering collaborative relationships
to achieve common objectives.

Good computing skills (Microsoft Office, data entry, Internet)
-
Working knowledge of coral reefs and fisheries conservation/management
-
Library-style research skills
-
Organizational skills.
Highly
Desirable
-
Experience living and working in cross-cultural environments
-
Knowledge of the Pacific region.
Specific Accountabilties
-
Ensuring project milestones and schedules for the position, detailed
in the workplan, are met.

Remuneration:
|
Remuneration
will be US$2,000 month. This is inclusive of fees, personal accommodation,
medical and other insurance, provident fund, etc.Remuneration is
tax-free in Samoa for non-citizens and non-residents of Samoa.The
monthly fee will be paid on arrival and assumption of work by the
Contractor, and at the beginning of each consecutive month. |
Withholding
Remuneration: |
SPREP
reserves the right to withhold remuneration if, in the opinion of
the Director or responsible officer/s, the work done under this
Agreement including the Reports are unsatisfactory, incompetent,
or incomplete. |
Accommodation:
|
Intern
is responsible for meeting personal accommodation costs. If necessary,
SPREP will assist identify suitable accommodation in Apia . |
