Expression of Interest: Pacific Invasives Learning Network Interim Coordinator

Expressions of Interest are invited for a Consultant to act as interim PILN Coordinator on a part time basis, to be based in SPREP’s office in Samoa .

 

The Pacific Invasives Learning Network (PILN)

 

PILN is a partnership of 11 Partners and collaborators including TNC, SPREP, IUCN ISSG, Conservation International, SPC, USP, Palau Office of Environmental Response and Coordination, USDA Forest Service and Birdlife International.

The network’s mission is to empower effective invasive species management through a participant-driven network that meets priority needs, rapidly shares skills and resources, provides links to technical expertise, increases information exchange, and accelerates on-the-ground action.

PILN serves teams of Pacific Island agencies responsible for invasives management, including agencies responsible for agriculture and natural resource management, international trade and border control, as well as environment and conservation.

The PILN coordinator has been hosted at SPREP in Samoa . The Interim coordinator will be the main contact point for the network and provide ongoing support to network participants, and may be requested to organize meetings and activities. The Interim Coordinator will also need to compile information messages to the network (including PILN Soundbites , an outline of regional activities and achievements), organize teleconferences, update the PILN website and support SPREP’s Invasive Species Officer with network activities.

The Interim Coordinator must have extensive knowledge of the PILN network and experience of participating in network meetings and training events, and must be familiar with regional invasive species activities, resident in Samoa and willing to accept a part-time, short-term contract

 

The consultancy will be on a fixed fee basis and subject to SPREP’s Consultancy Conditions.. The consultancy position will be part time (2 days per week) for an initial period of 5 weeks (total 10 days). Travel may be required for this position, with additional days paid pro rata . The consultancy may be ex tended for a longer term based on the position requirements.

PILN Interim Coordinator

Terms of reference

 

Overview

SPREP is advertising for an Interim PILN Coordinator for an initial period of 5 weeks (depending on the date the consultant is able to start) to start as soon as possible. The Interim Coordinator will be managed by SPREP’s Invasive Species Officer (ISO) and will undertake a number of activities to keep PILN support to Pacific Island Countries and Territories that are members of the PILN Network.

 

Duties

The Interim PILN coordinator will be contracted to SPREP to continue the network function of PILN. This initial consultancy will be completed by 19 th December 2008 on a part time basis. Part time will be two days per week, based at the SPREP Offices in Vailima.

•  Be the main point of contact for the network

•  Respond to all incoming messages

•  Reply

•  Forward to appropriate technical/institution person for action

•  Compile email information messages (funding opportunities, information, conferences, newsletters from others, etc) and send them out as and when

•  Compile bi-monthly Soundbites, together with the Pacific Invasives Initiative

•  Call partner teleconferences as required

•  Type up teleconference notes and distribute them to partners

•  Update the website periodically

•  Support the ISO (and other SPREP officers and partners) with network activities including:

•  Preparation for Strategic Action Planning

•  Preparation and follow-up for partner meeting

•  Preparation for the 2009 network meeting

•  Other duties connected with PILN as determined by the ISO, including possible organization of and attendance at meetings and other activities.

• Any travel to be undertaken will be negotiated between SPREP and the consultant and any additional work days paid pro rata .

• Essential criteria for PILN Interim Coordinator:

•  Extensive knowledge of the PILN network and experience of participating in PILN network meetings and training events

•  Familiarity with regional invasive species activities

•  Resident in Samoa

•  Willing to accept a part-time, short-term contract
