2009 Pacific Year of Climate Change - PYCC Campaign Coordinator

 

Background

Applications are invited from nationals of Pacific Island countries and territories for the above Internship position with SPREP in Apia , Samoa . Consideration may also be given to nationals of partner countries in the event no Pacific Islander is selected. The internship is for a period of 12 to 15 months starting as soon as possible. This Internship opportunity is open to young qualified Pacific Islanders who are no more than 30 years of age and who are seeking challenging opportunities to work with professionals for coordinating the Campaign for the Pacific Year of Climate Change.

The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) is an independent intergovernmental agency that provides assistance and technical advisory services to Pacific Island countries, territories and administrations in the protection and management of their environment to ensure they achieve sustainable development for present and future generations. SPREP comprises 25 members.

 

2009 is Pacific Year of Climate Change (PYCC). PYCC is a regional initiative coordinated by SPREP aimed at promoting awareness of climate change in the region in collaboration with regional partners such as national Governments, NGOs, the private sector and other regional agencies.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work closely with the Climate Change Adviser and the PYCC Team to undertake the following roles and responsibilities:

•  Work with relevant SPREP Programme Officers and SPREP partners to coordinate and facilitate the activities highlighted under the 2009 Pacific Year of Climate Change campaign regional framework.

•  Support SPREP members develop and implement national and community level Year of Climate Change activities.

•  Implement and support the coordination of communication activities including, but not exclusive to, production of monthly e-alerts, quarterly newsletters, regular media releases, coordinate media opportunities, update the PYCC web page, support education initiatives etc.

•  Work with key partners to develop and support PYCC initiatives.

•  Monitor and evaluate regional, national and community based activities relevant to the Year of Climate Change campaign.

•  Ensure communication is in line with SPREP’s corporate communications and existing and ongoing education initiatives.

 

Requirements

This is an exceptional opportunity for a young professional interested in working in a regional context in the Pacific. The successful candidate must have the following:

•  minimum academic qualification of a Diploma in Environmental Science, Communications or related field or equivalent experience;

•  demonstrated knowledge and experience in project coordination and organisational skills, preferably in the environmental field;

•  experience in working with the media; and

•  good written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.

Terms and Conditions

 

Duty Station :

SPREP Headquarters, Apia , Samoa .

Remuneration:

Remuneration will be US$1,300 month. This is inclusive of fees, personal accommodation, medical and other insurance, provident fund, etc.

Remuneration is tax-free in Samoa for non-citizens and non-residents of Samoa .

The monthly fee will be paid on arrival and assumption of work by the Contractor, and at the beginning of each consecutive month.

Withholding remuneration:

SPREP reserves the right to withhold remuneration if, in the opinion of the Director or responsible officer/s, the work done under this Agreement including the Reports are unsatisfactory, incompetent, or incomplete.

Relocation Expenses:

SPREP will meet certain appointment and termination expenses from outside Samoa, including accommodation en-route between home and Apia , and return, by the shortest and most economical route. This includes:

-   economy class airfares;

-   up to 20 kilos of excess baggage; and

- an establishment grant of US$500.

Accommodation:

Intern is responsible for meeting personal accommodation costs. If necessary, SPREP will assist identify suitable accommodation in Apia .
