Environmental Monitoring and Governance
SPREP's Environmental Monitoring and Governance Programme continued to provide policy and technical support to Niue with its final consultations on the State of Environment (SoE) Report and National Environmental Management Strategy (NEMS) from the 26-29 March 2018.
Government agencies, civil society organisations, community groups and village council leaders came together to finalise the SoE Report and NEMS documents. The active engagement and support from government sectors, non-governmental organisations and community representatives was crucial to the documents' creation. This visit was the final development stage for the SoE Report and NEMS before they are presented to the Cabinet for endorsement.
"I thank and acknowledge SPREP for its work and support to the Government of Niue in the development of the SoE/NEMS and making data management and storage easier and accessible. The support is timely and ties in well with the focus of the Government of Niue to address environmental issues Niue is faced with. Appreciation also goes to the UN Environment ACP MEA and GEF Inform project," said Ms. Mona Ainu'u, Niue Associate Minister for Environment.

SPREP also took the opportunity to introduce the Inform project, which complements and supports the SoE reporting process. The Inform Project will be establishing a portal to house high-quality data for future SoE Reports, NEMS, and other national and international environmental reporting obligations. The portal can support stakeholders in accessing data to assess current environmental conditions and take necessary remedial steps and monitor changes. The portal will also support environmental planning and forecasting.
The SoE Report, NEMS and data portal are key activities supported by SPREP, which contribute to and address the SPREP Strategic Plan's Regional Goal 4 for Pacific people and their environment to benefit from a commitment to, and best practice of environmental governance.
The Global Environment Facility funds the Inform project, and the European Union-funded ACP MEA 2 Project supports the development of SoE Reports and NEMS. The projects—implemented through UN Environment and executed by SPREP—complement each other by taking integrated approaches to key activities, such as improving data management systems, in Niue.
