Opportunities to build your understanding of climate change, through a partnership between the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Pacific Climate Change Centre, have been extended through to 2023.
The Director General of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) Mr Kosi Latu, the Resident Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Mr. Akihiko Hoshino and the Government of Samoa signed the extension of the Project for Capacity Building on Climate Resilience in the Pacific (CBCRP) on 17 March 2021. The CBCRP Project started in 2019 and has been extended until January 2023.
The Pacific Climate Change Centre Project for Capacity Building on Climate Resilience in the Pacific (CBCRP-PCCC) began in November 2019 with face-to-face training. Since then, there have been 5 training activities held, resulting in 222 Pacific Islanders nominated to build their climate change capacity.
“We are grateful for the impact of this programme across the Pacific islands region, the success of which has resulted in this extension,” said Mr Kosi Latu, Director General of SPREP.
“It is encouraging that we are able to continue supporting our Pacific Members. We now look forward to the positive outcomes that will continue through this programme over the coming years.”
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of activities planned for 2020 were affected with in-person training programs cancelled. As of September 2020, training activities were delivered online. To ensure activities of the project are delivered and further strengthened for the Pacific, the Joint Coordination Committee of CBCRP-PCCC agreed to extend the project period until January 2023.
The project is currently delivering the 5th training program on Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction through structural approaches on the newly launched PCCC E-learning platform. Using this innovative tool, the project has strengthened its training delivery capacity and doubled the number of training participants compared to the previous in-person training held in November 2019.
The CBCRP-PCCC plans to deliver three more training programs on Ecosystem, Agriculture and Fisheries (Food), and Health in 2021, and the four training programs on Tourism, Water, and Access to Climate Finance in 2022.
