The Climate Science and Information (CSI) Programme is SPREP’s regional mechanism supporting National Meteorological Services of Pacific island Members to enhance weather, climate, and multi-hazard early warning services. Evolving from the Pacific Meteorological Desk Partnership (PMDP), CSI now leads the coordination of meteorological and climate science support in partnership with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in the region and provides secretariat services to the Pacific Meteorological Council (PMC).

CSI contributes to the implementation of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, particularly in Thematic Area 1 – Climate Change and Disasters by improving early warning systems, climate resilience, and disaster risk reduction, and in Thematic Area 2 – Ocean and Environment by supporting marine weather and ocean services, environmental monitoring, and integrated observation systems.

CSI operates through four strategic functions: Governance and Coordination, ensuring alignment with regional priorities through the PMC and the high-level political guidance of the Pacific Ministerial Meeting on Meteorology (PMMM); Meteorology and Multi-Hazard Services, enhancing aviation, marine, and public weather forecasting and Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems (MHEWS); Climate Science, Services and Applications, strengthening seasonal outlooks, climate predictions, and the integration of traditional knowledge; and Infrastructure and Information Systems, maintaining and expanding observation networks, calibration services, and digital platforms while supporting Capacity building of Meteorological Services across the region.

Supported by collaborative initiatives such as Climate and Oceans Support Program fo the Pacific (COSPPac), Climate Services and Applications (ClimSA), Weather Ready Pacific, and other initiatives, CSI’s work supports national priorities while aligning with regional frameworks like the Pacific Islands Meteorological Strategy (PIMS) and the Framework for Resilient Development in the Pacific (FRDP), as well as global commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Early Warnings for All, and the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS). CSI ensures science-based services that empower Pacific communities to build resilience, manage risk, and sustainably protect their ocean and environment.
