Our Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) helps SPREP manage environmental and social risks and impacts on an ongoing basis.  Its purpose is to avoid or minimize potential negative environmental and social impacts of our work while also looking to maximise the environmental and social benefits.

SPREP’s ESMS safeguards include:

  • Assessment and Management of Environmental and Social Risks and Impacts
  • Labour and Working Conditions
  • Resource Efficiency and Pollution Prevention
  • Community Health, Safety, and Security
  • Land Acquisition and Involuntary Resettlement
  • Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Management of Living Natural Resources
  • Indigenous Peoples
  • Cultural Heritage

SPREP’s Environmental and Social standards have been developed to meet the intent of the 2012 International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards while also addressing donor specific issues as appropriate.

Environmental and Social Grievance Process
When a SPREP project is likely to generate adverse impacts to affected communities or the environment, SPREP establishes a simple grievance process. This gives communities a way to express their concerns to SPREP.

Grievance processes will be established separately for each project that has a higher environmental and social risk. However, communities that would like to report an E&S issue to SPREP can always contact us …..
