Lead image: Call for Speakers at the Nature Conservation Conference in 2020!
Island and Ocean Ecosystems

January 13, 2020 – Announced last year in July, the 10th Pacific Islands Conference on Nature Conservation and Protected Areas will be hosted in New Caledonia at the Tjibaou Cultural Centre 19-24 April 2020. The theme for the conference is ‘Nature Conservation Action for a Resilient Pacific.’

Interested speakers and those wanting to host sessions are now invited to come forward to be involved in what will be the most significant nature conservation event for the Pacific region in 2020.

The conference is being coordinated by the Government of New Caledonia, the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the Pacific Islands Roundtable for Nature Conservation (PIRT), chaired by the Director of the Oceania Regional Office of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The conference will also recognise people, communities and organisations that have championed significant conservation and other environmental action in the region by presenting the Pacific Islands Environmental Leadership Awards (PIELA).

The conference organisers are looking for dedicated professionals to join the panel of speakers, or to host sessions. Anyone working in the field of conservation, at both the international, regional or grassroots level, is highly encouraged to submit a proposal. Speakers and sessions are needed for the following themes: people and nature conservation action; economic development and biodiversity conservation; safeguarding priority sites, including cultural heritage; safeguarding species and genetic diversity; threats to biodiversity; and monitoring, governing and financing nature conservation action. Additionally, three cross-cutting themes: islands, ocean, and traditional knowledge will be addressed through thematic streams.

“Speaking at the 10th Pacific Island Conference for Nature Conservation or hosting a panel session provides a significant and important opportunity for individuals and organisations to have input into shaping the future conservation agenda for the region, and to highlight, debate and discuss what the current state of conservation is and what a sustainable future looks like, and what needs to be done to get there,” said Ms Amanda Wheatley, Biodiversity Adviser of SPREP.

Interested speakers or session hosts are invited to prepare a brief proposal by accessing further information and the application forms here: https://www.pacificnatureconference.com/conference/speakers-and-guidance. These can be emailed to [email protected] by 17th January 2020.
