“Our Pacific Ocean Media Award” has been extended to close on 5 November, 2018 with submissions having been published or broadcast between 3 October, 2017 and 3 November, 2018.

Winners will be announced on 3 December, 2018 the same day as the opening plenary of the UN Climate Conference in Katowice, Poland this year.

Launched on World Ocean Day, 8 June, this year the Our Pacific Ocean Media Award commemorates the work of Pacific island journalists through a partnership between the Pacific Community (SPC), Pacific Island Forum Secretariat, Pacific Island News Association (PINA), Office of the Pacific Ocean Commissioner (OPOC) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).

It calls for Pacific island journalists to submit stories under the categories of print, radio or television, with the fourth category open for journalism students.  The judges will also give a best overall prize which will be decided among the winners of the four categories.  Winning submissions from each category will be awarded USD600..

Extending the award for one more month provides the opportunity for more Pacific island journalists to submit entries, an opportunity to celebrate their work.

The underlying theme for all entries submitted is our ocean.  These stories can be science based, showcasing community projects and, or positive actions to conserve our ocean or her resources.  Stories can also be able problems caused by bad practices or about ocean champions – people doing positive things for our ocean.  The wide range of angles and possibilities is welcome, provided all submissions are about our ocean.

Our Pacific Ocean Media Award is open for Pacific island media workers who reside and work in the Pacific islands, noting submissions can be in English, French, or national languages with the English or French translation.

There is a maximum of three entries per person.  A judging panel of four will check against journalism skill, accuracy, proficiency in the media genre, innovation and creativity to maintain interest.

The award will close on 5 November, 2018 with submissions to have been published or broadcast between 3 October, 2017 and 3 November, 2018.
