Climate Change Resilience
Accessing regular, affordable, safe and clean energy supply is increasingly dominating the Pacific Island Countries and Territories' core planning agenda that not only confines to energy security but poses threats to the security of the economies, livelihoods and sovereignties of these island states.
In 2010, the United Nations General Assembly designated 2012 as the International Year for Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All), in recognition of the growing importance of energy for economic development and climate change mitigation.
The Pacific launched this initiative in Suva on the 18th May 2012 joining the rest of the world in fostering concrete actions that will see the achievement of the three objectives of SE4All.
The aim of SE4All initiative is to create avenues for concrete action that can lead to the achievement of specified UN objectives by 2030 that is (1) achieving universal access to modern energy service (2) doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency and (3) doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

Mr Nixon Kua, Climate Change Mitigation Officer to the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) said the year is significant to the Pacific Islands Greenhouse Gas Abatement through Renewable Energy Project (PIGGAREP), a project promoting and working having Sustainable Energy for the Pacific Islands.
The project has assisted countries to gain access to affordable, sustainable, safe and clean energy in the long run as a mean to improve Pacific Islands' livelihoods and quality of life.
This year PIGGAREP project is reinforcing the three objectives of the SE4All to the member countries through its success stories to maximise economic advancement.
