Waste Management and Pollution Control
A preparatory visit to the Marshall Islands in March signalled the commencement of the PacWaste atoll integrated solid waste management pilot, known as the PacWaste Atoll Pilot. Following a comprehensive selection process, Majuro was identified as the ideal site for this important pilot programme which is part of the €7,850,000, four year (2013-2017), PacWaste project.

The development of an integrated atoll solid waste management system is one of four different focus areas of the European Union-funded project to improve regional hazardous waste management. The other three areas include regional programmes on the improved management of asbestos, healthcare waste and electronic waste.

SPREP's PacWaste team held meetings with government departments and other counterparts, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Office of Environment Planning and Policy Coordination, Ministry of Health, the Majuro Atoll Waste Company and Marshalls Energy Company and the Majuro Atoll Local Government. to prepare for the next steps in launching the demonstration pilot.

The pilot will focus on an integrated, whole of waste system approach which targets priority infrastructure works, worker training, waste collection systems, recycling programme improvements, public awareness and participation and the implementation of container deposit-type systems to ensure the sustainability of recycling programmes.

Further information will be collected via a baseline study on status and options for solid waste management on Majuro Atoll before physical interventions under the PacWaste Atoll Pilot are begun.
