23 March 2015, SPREP - A new project for the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) to strengthen the capacity of Pacific island countries to develop environment projects was signed off today.
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is a partnership of 183 countries who work with partners to address global environment issues, providing billions of dollars to fund environmental projects. Since 1991, the GEF has provided 13.5 USD billion in grants and leveraged 65USD billion in co-financing for 3,900 projects in over 165 developing countries.
The six focal areas of the GEF are: biodiversity; climate change; chemicals and waste; land degradation; international waters; and sustainable management of forests and REDD+.
"This new project will support our efforts to obtain accreditation as a Project Agency of the GEF as requested by the members of SPREP. When that happens SPREP will be better placed to support Pacific countries in accessing GEF resources on environmental programmes across the six focal areas of the GEF," said Mr. David Sheppard, Director-General of SPREP.
He further noted: "we are delighted to work with UNDP as our Implementing Agency for this MSP. UNDP is an effective, seasoned and mature Implementing Agency and a founding member of the GEF. We will benefit greatly from UNDP's guidance and expertise throughout the implementation of project activities."
"We're very happy to be part of this programme, we have a longstanding relationship with SPREP and it's a pleasure for us to help SPREP be all that it can be," said Ms. Lizbeth Cullity the United Nations Resident Coordinator & United Nations Development Programme Representative - Samoa Multi-Country Office.
SPREP is currently working on accreditation towards becoming a GEF Project Agency. It intends to apply for accreditation once this project has completed its capacity building activities that will assist greatly in positioning SPREP better to meet the accredited standards of the GEF. This will allow SPREP members to apply for GEF funds and support through SPREP.
The United Nations Development Programe (UNDP) is the implementing agency for this one million USD project funded by GEF, executed by SPREP.
