Waste Management and Pollution Control

A reporter from the Solomon Star newspaper has been awarded the 2012 Vision Pasifika Media Award for his news item in the weekend paper about poor waste management practices in Honiara and what can be done to solve it.

Congratulations to Mr. Daniel Namosuaia of the Solomon Star who is the winner of the award.

Clean Pacific was the theme of the 2012 Vision Pasifika Media Award coordinated by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) to commemorate a Pacific campaign that addressed waste management issues in the region.

Mr. Namosuaia was selected by an independent panel of judges who commended him for his work titled – “Wastes of our City”.

“SPREP is pleased to be able to acknowledge the role of Pacific media in advocating and raising awareness for good environmental practices,” said Ms. Nanette Woonton, the Media and Public Relations Officer at SPREP.

“This is our fourth year to coordinate this award and we’re very pleased with the results we are seeing throughout the region. The entries submitted show that our environment has a place in Pacific news.”

A special award of commendation was also awarded to Ms. Helen Rei, a journalist from Papua New Guinea who works for the Centre for Locally Managed Areas Inc  who wrote news articles that were published by the Post-Courier and The National newspaper in PNG. Her articles were about the cleaning of the ocean.

“There was a range of different news stories submitted and this was one that stood out to us, we are pleased that we can commemorate the work done to raise environmental awareness.”

Mr. Namosuaia was awarded 500 USD for his award category and Miss Rei was awarded 250 USD.

The 2012 Vision Pasifika Media Award is a partnership between SPREP and the UNEP – EC Project – “Capacity building related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Countries.”

MEET THE WINNERS

Mr Daniel Namosuaia is from the Malaita Province of the Solomon Islands, he is an economist turned reporter that has a deep interest in investigative journalism and covering issues such as climate change, the environment, socio-economic development, fisheries and good governance. Mr. Namosuaia joined the Solomon Star Newsroom in 2010 and was awarded the Regional Tuna Communication award in 2012.

Helen ReiMs. Helen Tarawa-Rei

Ms Helen Tarawa-Rei is from the Northern Province of Papua New Guinea. She is a journalism graduate from the Divine Word Institute (University) of Papua New Guinea and has an Advanced Diploma in Practical Journalism from Cardiff University, Wales, United Kingdom.

With over 20 years of experience in the mainstream media, Ms. Rei was awarded a Medal of Recognition from the Governor General of PNG, Sir Silas Atopare in 2000 for her work in media coverage of health and education issues with The Independent Newspaper.
