His Excellency, Mr. Wang Xuefeng, Chinese Ambassador to Samoa, delivered a cheque of USD 150,000 to the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) to assist delivery of the core areas of SPREP's mandate.
On behalf of SPREP, the Director General, Mr. David Sheppard, expressed his sincere thanks to the Government of China for its valued support, which has been generously provided to SPREP since 1998.

"This contribution will enable SPREP to support Pacific island countries and territories to better manage and protect their environment," said Mr. Sheppard. "In particular it will strengthen our work in the core areas of biodiversity and ecosystem management, climate change, environmental monitoring and governance, waste management and pollution control, as well as SPREP's governance and administration services," he said.
Mr. Sheppard also noted that China is 'walking the talk' in relation to addressing environmental and climate change issues.
"SPREP would like to congratulate the Government of China on submitting its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC)in June, which notes the intention of China to peak carbon dioxide emissions by around 2030 and to increase the non-fossil fuel share of all energy to around 20 percent by 2030," Mr. Sheppard said.

HE Mr. Wang Xuefeng stated, "Although not a member of SPREP, China has a great interest in the work and achievements of SPREP, and takes pride in its continuous assistance to SPREP over the decades along with other partners to support SPREP to tackle the major environmental and sustainable development challenges in the Pacific region including climate change, energy conservation and environmental protection measures."
"As a leading inter-governmental organisation, SPREP has done a lot of work through various academic research and on the ground projects in supporting Pacific island countries and territories to address issues in relation to climate change, biodiversity and ecosystems management, as well as environmental monitoring and governance. These issues are so relevant and important not only to each and every Pacific island country and territory , but also to China and the whole world," said His Excellency.
The hand-over ceremony took place this week at the SPREP campus in Apia, Samoa, with a further briefing and site visit planned for the Ambassador later this year.
