UN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SMALL ISLAND DEVELOPING STATES (SIDS) 2014

In August 2014, the Government of Samoa will be hosting its biggest event ever – the 3rd International Conference for Small Island Developing States (2014 SIDS Conference). In excess of 3,000 participants from the three SIDS regions – Caribbean Islands, Pacific Islands and AIMS (Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean and South China Sea Islands), development partners and civil society are expected to attend the event.

The Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States will be held from 1 to 4 September 2014 in Apia, Samoa. Preparatory meetings will be held in the preceding week.

The main aims of the Conference are to:

  1. assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA) and the MSI;
  2. seek a renewed political commitment by all countries to effectively address the special needs and vulnerabilities of SIDS;
  3. strengthening of collaborative partnerships between small island developing States and the international community;
  4. identify priorities for the sustainable development of SIDS for the post-2015 UN development agenda.

This conference will also provide input to the ongoing development of sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the post 2015 development agenda.

This page has been developed to assist SPREP members and staff with information on logistics and preparations for the SIDS 2014 Conference. All official information on the Conference can be found at www.sids2014.org.
