In the early 1990's SPREP assisted Members with their National Environment Management Strategies (NEMS) processes. These were key national environment planning processes at the time for mainstreaming environmental considerations into countries' development needs. The NEMS reports were the basis for various national strategies that address key environment issues including climate change, biodiversity conservation, waste and pollution, and land management. These national strategies articulate how countries will meet their obligations to international conventions or Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) through nationally driven actions. In the last two decades countries' environmental activities and requirements have expanded tremendously, requiring further efforts to improve coordination and coherent implementation beyond the measures that were made under the NEMS.
What we do
One of the key priorities of the EMG division is to assist SPREP Members to review and strengthen the integration of their work, building on the valuable experience and learning from the NEMs.
