SPREP Highlights over the last 25 years

  • 1992 – SPREP headquarters in Samoa established.
  • 1993 – The Sixth SPREP Meeting was held in Guam this year, the first outside of SPREP offices.
  • 1994 – SPREP’s first Corporate Plan was approved at the Seventh SPREP Meeting held in Kiribati.
  • 1995 – SPREP conducted its first ever regional campaign, a public awareness campaign aimed at highlighting the plight of the region’s sea turtles. The signing of the Waigani Treaty took place at the 1995 South Pacific Forum, which SPREP will act as secretariat on entry into force.
  • 1996 – The Ninth SPREP Meeting held in November was the first to be convened at Ministerial level.
  • 2000 – SPREP staff moved into the newly completed SPREP Centre in Vailima.
  • 2005 – Year of Action against Waste.
  • 2016 – Pacific Year of the Whales.
  • 2017 – Final year of the annual SPREP Meeting of Officials. It will now be held biennially.
  • 2018 – Pacific Year of the Coral Reef. Ground breaking of the Pacific Climate Change Centre.
