Following consultations on the progress on the Regional Marine Species Programme and Action Plans (2013-2017) we are updating and refreshing the plans, incorporating the Sharks and Rays Action Plan into the programme, and adding a new plan for seabirds. We will be sharing these drafts by the end of May for comments, followed by a series of Regional online meetings (Draft Agenda attached) to discuss and finalise these plans. We expect to be able to arrange endorsement of the new Regional Marine Species Programme and Action Plans 2021-2026 by countries, following this process and meetings.

The Blue Continent of the Pacific islands region covers over 10% of the world's oceans, and is home to a range of migratory marine species. Turtles, whales, dolphins, sharks and seabirds are central totems of many cultures, and move as freely as people between the jurisdictions of SPREP Members. However, many of these species have been greatly reduced in abundance and are now threatened or endangered, especially in he light of a rapidly growing human population and impacts of climate change, pollution, fishing and habitat loss.
