Cir#21/53: Invitation: Regional workshop on the Gap assessment and lessons learnt on the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Aichi Targets.

The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), in collaboration with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA) will convene a regional workshop to feed into a Gap Assessment Report highlighting the main gaps, challenges and lessons learnt on the implementation of the CBD Aichi Targets from 2011 – 2020. The workshop will be held virtually on 7 July 2021 from 1:00pm – 4:00pm (Samoa time).

Cir#21/49: Concept Notes on the proposed establishment of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Biodiversity Coalition and SIDS 10-year Capacity Development Roadmap under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Global Biodiversity Framework.

The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), in collaboration with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), convened a Talanoa session on 3 June 2021 that brought together CBD Biodiversity Focal Points to discuss enhancing SIDS’ capacities in the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) discussions and negotiations on the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework .

Cir#21/41: Call for nominations: Virtual training “Ecosystem-based Adaptation and Mitigation” Date: 23 June – 28 July 2021, Pacific Climate Change Centre, SPREP, Apia, Samoa.

We are pleased to announce that nominations are being accepted for the sixth regional training on “Ecosystem-based Adaptation and Mitigation”. As agreed, to in the Tenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the Waigani Convention (COP-9) held in Apia in September in 2019, we are pleased to advise that the Seventh Meeting of the Steering Committee of the Pacific Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for the joint implementation of the Waigani and Basel Convention (SCPRC-7) will be held on the 29th of June 2021. Due to the current COVID pandemic, the meeting will be held virtually.

We are pleased to advise that the 11th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to The Convention to Ban the Importation into Forum Island Countries of Hazardous and Radioactive Wastes and to Control the Transboundary Movement and the Management of Hazardous Wastes within the South Pacific Region (Waigani Convention) will be held virtually on the 03rd September 2021, prior to the 30th SPREP meeting.

Cir#21/31: Enhancing Access to Climate Finance through the Adaptation Fund

The Adaptation Fund recently announced at its 36th Adaptation Fund Board meeting it would double the amount of funding that countries can access from the Fund. The Fund's cap on single country project funding is being raised from US$10 million to US$20 million. Currently within the Pacific, only four countries are accessing the country allocation, reflecting historical trends.
